Leyton

Crime novelist Ruth Rendell was born on 17th February 1930 in Leyton as Ruth Barbara Grasemann.  Her father had done labouring work in Plymouth dockyard but became a science and mathematics teacher.  Ruth Rendell’s mother had Scandinavian parents.


The TV comedy writer, performer and senior manager Frank Muir (born 1920 of an engineer father) lived at 28 Church Road E10 (photo on right) from early secondary school age, attending Leyton County High School until his father died.  He lived at Church Road with his mother until his marriage in 1949.
