Ancient Routes

Leytonstone High Road follows a ridge of high ground and as a traffic route it is ancient.  “The ground slopes down to the Lea westwards across Leyton, the High Road using the beginning of the slope to ensure a well-drained route, and rising to the Green Man roundabout” 1.
