Leytonstone High Road (Green Man end)

I can remember my mother taking me to Lyons Corner House which is now (Barclays Bank) in the High Road for a bowl of soup and a buttered roll.  Home and Colonial stores was more or less opposite Bearmans ... Saturday morning pictures at the Rialto. I also remember Ludlows the bakers in Church Lane.  The smell of fresh bread being baked was fabulous.  There used to be a fabulous shop in Church Lane that sold all types of teas and coffee in big sacks.  Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the shop! The smell from that shop was lovely.

I worked in Bearmans.  It was a quality store very ‘Are You Being Served’ type place. I always remember Father Christmas arriving down Leytonstone High Road with the Dagenham Girl Pipers.  One particular year the ride was a Gondola to see Father Christmas.  I was a Gondola girl .... !
